What is Functional Medicine?

Functional medicine emphasises a definable and teachable process of integrating multiple knowledge bases within a pragmatic intellectual matrix that focuses on functionality at many levels, rather than a single treatment for a single diagnosis. Functional medicine uses the patient’s story as a key tool for integrating diagnosis, signs and symptoms, and evidence of clinical imbalances into a comprehensive approach to improve both the patient’s environmental inputs and his or her physiological function.

The Institute for Functional Medicine teaches health care professional’s how to apply these principles in practice through an intensive 5 day training course called Applying Functional Medicine in Clinical Practice™.

I attended and completed the AFMCP™-UK training in London in 2018 and specialist training on Hormones in November 2022 . I am a member of the Institute for Functional Medicine.

I completed my first Nutrigenomics training in 2016 with Genesnippers and in 2025 completed the Lifecode Gx Nutrigenomics Practitioner Training.

Nutrigenomics looks at an individual’s DNA and how the body is able to work on a biochemical level and what support may be needed as a result of SNP variants (common examples include MTHFR and COMT for methylation issues).

The range of available reports include nutrient absorption, hormones, detoxification, metabolics, histamine intolerances, nervous system, thyroid balance, metals and minerals. There are also specialist reports for APOE and Athletes.
